Although I took several trips up to Chicago I am going to keep the Illinois blog separate from any past or future Chicago posts. This will be Illinois minus Chicago.

9/11

The people of the USA, mark today as we remember the horrifying events that occurred 10 years ago. We honor the pursuit of happiness that the normal people who died in the planes and buildings were striving for. We honor the courage of the civil servants and citizens who risked their lives in the aftermath. We honor our military who have fought and died, allowing us normal people to pursue happiness. We honor our government, who is made up of "just people" who work hard to give the people a representative republic. We honor President George W. Bush, for making hard choices and sticking to them. We honor President Barack Obama for serving as commander in chief. We honor The Great United States of America. We honor God, as we turn to Him and rely on Him to keep our country safe and strong.

May God bless this great land.

Notes

I am going to continue the state by state theme until back to Oregon. It will be mostly in order of appearance. I may stop at a city or unusual site and showcase it. However since Phothogs 100th blog is rapidly approaching I am going to do something different to celebrate.

After the states I have a few great waterfalls to post. In fact as of late August I have visited and photographed every major waterfall along the North Umpqua highway! No small feat I assure you.

Anyhow enough notes.

Nebraska!

It would seem that possibly Nebraska would be devoid of interest, especially on I-80, but I found much to interest. Here are a few pictures I took on the road.

Oregon! (Eastern)

Eastern Oregon is not my usual forte. However this rugged and dry land is beautiful and unique.

I was just passing through on my way to places as far east as Ohio, cities as big as Chicago, and as desolate as Wyoming.

I posted Oh!o in Ohio and Chicago an hour out. I am posting Oregon! in Oregon, and subsequent states and areas will be posted from here in Oregon as well.

The sin of Cropping

Confess. You cropped your picture. And then were guilty about it.

Is it really wrong? Well....

No. There are plenty of circumstances in which cropping is entirely acceptable.

Just printing out family 4x6's? Cropping isn't gonna hurt.
Newspaper picture? Not gonna need full res anyway.
Advertisement? Depends on the final size.

That is what it all really boils down to. The final printed or published size.
As humans we have limitations. Such as distance to our subjects. Longer lenses help.
But limitations still remain. Thus we ought not punish ourselves for our natural limitations.

If your picture has detracting elements that only cropping fixes than strive for a tighter shot if possible(next time). But it remains your picture. Does it reflect poor composition etc. or does it merely reflect the natural limitations that were in place at the time?

These jets were doing a flyover for a local parade and they were heading towards the event. 20 miles distant. And they were rather high up. So... show a blue sky with some specks in it? No! This image underwent major cropping. It reflects my limitations and thus it is limited in what it can be used for. I blew out the highlights and darkened the shadows for a black and white, contrasty image. It could be used at some large printing sizes. It is limited. But its a neat shot.
